Abstract

One of the key abilities that is implied to be a part of all abilities is listening.  In learning listening skills, many methods could help students in their listening skills and one of them is fill gap method. Fill gap was used to provide something that is missing or needed. It can be used to measure students' listening skills. The research was conducted at English study program of Nusa Cendana University. This research addressed two research questions: first, what are the student’s perception toward the use of fill gap method in English learning listening experienced by the 3rd semester students of English study program? Second, what are the difficulties encountered by the 3rd semester students of English department in using the filling gap method? The aims of research were, (1) to know what are the student’s perception toward the use of fill gap method in English learning listening experienced by the 3rd-semester students of English study program. (2) to find out the difficulties that are encountered by the 3rd semester students of English study program in using the filling gap method. The research design used was descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research was 18th students from 3rd semester students of English study program. The data of this research were collected by using questionnaire (open-ended questions) and interview. The research followed three techniques of data analysis; data reduction, data display, and concluding. The result showed that fill gap method could help students in their English listening skills because students felt that this method supports understanding and retention of audio content. They could practice recalling context, vocabulary, and grammar, which helps reinforce language skills. In fact, students largely agreed on the fill-gap method's adaptability and ease of use. The problems faced by the students were; Different Accents, the variety of English accents posed a significant challenge for students when using the fill-gap method.
